How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

  • Trailer Jacks Manufactured in the USA
There are some Dutton-Lainson trailer jacks that are made in the USA as well as a few that are not. Any jacks that we carry that are made in the USA have that as part of the description to help set them apart. Currently we have the following options: Pull Pin, Easy Swivel Trailer Jack with 8" Wheel - Sidewind - 1,500 lbs. # DL22800 Pull Pin, Easy Swivel Trailer Jack with 6" Wheel - Sidewind - 1,000 lbs. # DL22560 A-Frame Trailer Jack - Sidewind - 1,000 lbs. by Dutton-Lainson # DL22530 Pull...

  • Do You Have a Trailer Jack with Rubber Wheel that will Line Up with My Welded on Bracket?
Hello Paul, I went out and measured the bracket for the Pull Pin, Easy Swivel Trailer Jack with 8" Wheel - Sidewind - 1,500 lbs. by Dutton-Lainson # DL22800, and it looks like we have a winner. I attached the pictures; I got 4 1/2" x 5 1/2". I would like to mention that the wheel is not rubber; it is, however, made from a heavy-duty polypropylene, which is great for resisting flat spots and cold cracking. We do have some Ark jacks like the ARK Extreme Off-Road Ratcheting Trailer Jack...

We have several options for a bolt on swivel jack for your trailer with 2 by 5 inch frame (see link). I would recommend the Pull Pin, Easy Swivel Trailer Jack with 8 inch Wheel - Sidewind - 1,500 lbs. by Dutton-Lainson, item # DL22800, for your trailer if the 1500 pound capacity is sufficient for your boat and trailer. These jacks are high quality and designed to fit square tongues up to 3 x 5 inches. The etrailer Round, Snap-Ring Swivel Jack - Bolt On - Topwind - 10 1/2 inch Lift - 2,000...

  • Trailer Jack Compatibility with 14 Inch Tongue Space
The Pull Pin, Easy Swivel Trailer Jack with 8" Wheel - Sidewind - 1,500 lbs. by Dutton-Lainson # DL22800 has an overall length of 26-5/8 inches, so it will not fit where you are desiring. The height to the bracket when retracted is 13 inches, but the overall will to too long. The closest I found was the # PS1400300303 which is 11 inches to the center of the bracket when retracted as is # TJBB-2001-B.

  • Trailer Jack Recommendation for Trailer with Swivel Dutton Lainson Jack Installed
Based on the picture you submitted the matching trailer jack we have to what you have is the Dutton Lainson part # DL22800. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. At the very worst you may have to use the bolt on brackets that come with this jack, but it looks like this would bolt right up to the bracket you have on your trailer.

I can certainly provide those measurements for you! I spoke with my contact at Dutton-Lainson about the Pull Pin, Easy Swivel Trailer Jack # DL22800 and Replacement Wheel # DL22410. He confirmed that the inner bore of the wheel measures 0.645 inches. The inner metal sleeve that the bolt goes through measures 2-9/32 inches (2.281 inches) long. The dimensions of the wheel are 8 inches diameter x 2 inches wide. I have attached photos showing these measurements for you.

  • Swivel Trailer Jack with a Wheel for a 2007 Viking Pop-up Camper
The Fulton jack, # F1411300301, is a weld-on application and you will need mounting bracket # P9012-00. The mounting bracket is the part that gets welded to the trailer frame. Any welding should be done by a qualified professional welder. It can be mounted on the trailer near the coupler (where the tongue weight is lowest) anywhere you have space. A 1500 pound capacity can handle a tongue weight of 1500 pounds. It is very unlikely that any pop-up camper will have a tongue weight that exceeds...

  • Trailer Stuck to Truck and Jack Wont Crank
Usually, the jaw on the underside of a trailer coupler can be adjusted by tightening or loosening the nut on the underside of the jaw. If you loosen the jaw slightly, you should be able to get the coupler to come off the trailer ball. Once you get the coupler off the ball, lubricate it to make sure the latching mechanism operates smoothly. I like using the spray lithium grease. You'll want to make sure that you're using the correct size trailer ball for the coupler you're using. The coupler...

  • Are there Instructions for the Internal Parts of a Swivel Trailer Jack
The reason why you do not see written instructions for repairs of jacks is the internal parts of a typical trailer jack are not end-user serviceable with the exception of the top gears. And with those it is just a matter of removing the old ones and then reversing the process to install the new ones. The major components that are generally not serviceable are the screw and nut. The nut is fixed inside the jack tube and the screw threads are crimped at one end to prevent over-extension...

  • Trailer Jack Replacement Recommendation for a 6,000 lb Snowmobile Trailer
At capacity your trailer will weigh 6,000 lbs plus the weight of your trailer. You will need to pick a jack that can safely handle the maximum tongue weight that your trailer will see. Tongue weight is usually 10-15 percent of the total weight of the trailer. So if you use 6,000 lbs as the total weight of the trailer you would have a tongue weight of 600-900 lbs. • How Do I Know If I Should Replace The Wiring On My Trailer?
If the copper wire has turned black, it will mean one of two things. First, salt water somehow got through the insulation/jacket, causing it to severely oxidize. Second, it overheated and actually burned some of that jacket. In either case, I highly recommend replacing you wiring. Compromised wire like this can cause bad connections at best, and/or overheat again and possible catch fire, which would be catastrophically worse. Depending on how you have everything wired and how many accessories...
